Sean Young received his master’s degree in Health Services Research and PhD in Psychology from Stanford University. Dr. Young has worked in technology and user behavior/human factors at NASA Ames Research Center and Cisco Systems, and has advised various companies and start-ups. Dr. Young studies digital behavior and prediction technology, or how and why people use social media, mobile apps, and wearable devices. His research aims to apply this knowledge to predict what people will do in various fields (e.g., medicine, politics, business) and to change what they will do in the future.

James H. Fowler: University of California, San Diego [ Email ]
James Fowler received a master’s degree in International Relations from Yale University and a PhD in Government from Harvard University. He specializes in social networks, cooperation, political participation, and genopolitics (the study of the genetic basis of political behavior). Dr. Fowler is currently Professor of Medical Genetics in the School of Medicine and Professor of Political Science in the Division of Social Science. In 2010, he was named a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.

Steffanie A. Strathdee: University of California, San Diego [ Email ]
Steffanie Strathdee received her master’s degree and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto. Dr. Strathdee has spent the past two decades focusing on HIV prevention in underserved, marginalized populations in developed and developing countries, including injection drug users, men having sex with men, and sex workers. She has published more than 500 peer-reviewed publications on HIV prevention and the natural history of HIV and related infections and the evaluation of interventions to reduce harms among substance-using populations.

Wei Wang: University of California, Los Angeles [ Email ]
Wei Wang received her master’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and her PhD in Computer Science from UCLA. Previously, she was a professor in Computer Science and a member of the Carolina Center for Genomic Sciences and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was a research staff member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Dr. Wang’s research focuses on big data analytics, data mining, bioinformatics and computational biology, and databases. She has filed seven patents and published more than 170 research papers in international journals and major peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
Tyson Condie: University of California, Los Angeles [ Email ]
Tyson Condie received his master’s degree from Stanford University and PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining UCLA, Dr. Condie was a Principal Scientist at Microsoft in the Cloud and Information Services Lab (CISL) and a Research Scientist at Yahoo!. His main expertise is in building large-scale distributed systems for processing massive datasets.

Vagelis Hristidis received his M.S. and PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego. His research places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary topics, particularly health informatics and social networks.
Michael J. Carey: University of California, Irvine [ Email ]
Michael Carey holds a master’s degree in Electric Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on data-intensive computing, database management systems, e-business applications and infrastructure, middleware, distributed systems, and performance evaluation.
Chen Li: University of California, Irvine
Chen Li received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University and his M.S. and B.S. in Computer Science from Tsinghua University, China. His research interests are in the field of data management, including data-intensive computing, query processing and optimization, and text analytics.
Christine Kirkpatrick: University of California, San Diego
Christine Kirkpatrick, is the division director for Research Computing & Data Services at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California San Diego, and the Executive Director of the National Data Service (NDS), a U.S. initiative focused on how scientists and researchers across all disciplines can find, reuse, and publish data. Her research interests include research data frameworks, as well as services and interoperability challenges of creating a seamless ‘datanet’ ecosystem. Via the West Big Data Innovation Hub, where Ms. Kirkpatrick serves as Deputy Director, she contributes approaches for creating public-private, non-profit, and government partnerships to innovate and stimulate regional workforce development. Ms. Kirkpatrick holds a Masters in Architecture-based Enterprise Systems Engineering from UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering.
Vassilis Tsortas: University of California, Riverside
Vassilis Tsotras received his M.S., M.Phil. and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University. His research interests are
in the field of database management including scalable data management, spatiotemporal data, semistructured data, access methods, query processing and optimization.
Amarnath Gupta: University of California, San Diego
Amarnath Gupta received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Jadavpur University in India. He is currently a full Research Scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center of UC San Diego, and directs the Advanced Query Processing Lab. His primary areas of research include semantic information integration, large-scale graph databases, ontology management, event data management and query processing techniques. Before joining UC San Diego, he was the Chief Scientist at Virage, Inc., a startup company in multimedia information systems. Dr. Gupta has authored over 100 papers and a book on Event Modeling, holds 13 patents and is a recipient of the 2011 ACM Distinguished Scientist award.
